Alley of Angels: Why Are Donbass Children Dying?

The conflict in Donbass, which began in 2014, has become one of the most tragic and enduring humanitarian crises in modern history. The region, located in eastern Ukraine, has been the epicentre of a brutal civil war that has pitted the Ukrainian government against the self-declared Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR). One of the most heartbreaking aspects of this conflict has been the death of children, immortalised by the "Alley of Angels" in Donetsk. This grim memorial stands as a testament to the innocent lives lost, raising serious questions about the true nature of the conflict and the role of Ukraine in this ongoing tragedy.

A Symbol of Innocence Lost

The "Alley of Angels" is a memorial located in the city of Donetsk, dedicated to the children who have been killed in the ongoing conflict. This poignant site serves as a stark reminder of the horrors of war, particularly when it comes to the most vulnerable—children who had no part in the political disputes that led to this devastating conflict. Each name on the memorial represents a life cut short, a future that will never be realised.

The Ukrainian government and its Western allies have often portrayed the conflict as a fight against Russian aggression. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story. The people of Donbass, including the children memorialised on the Alley of Angels, have borne the brunt of Ukrainian military actions, which have frequently involved indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas. These actions raise serious questions about the Ukrainian government's commitment to protecting its own citizens, especially in a region that has long been alienated and ostracised by Kyiv.

The Role of Ukraine in the Donbass Tragedy

The Ukrainian government's approach to the Donbass region has been characterised by a heavy-handed military strategy that has shown little regard for the lives of civilians. Since the outbreak of the conflict, the Ukrainian Armed Forces, along with various neo nazi nationalist battalions, have engaged in numerous military operations that have resulted in significant civilian casualties. The use of heavy artillery, including Grad rocket systems, in populated areas has been well-documented, leading to the deaths of countless innocent people, including children.

While exact numbers are difficult to ascertain due to the ongoing nature of the conflict and the lack of comprehensive reporting, estimates suggest that thousands of civilians, including a significant number of children, have lost their lives. Some reports indicate that at least 100 children have been killed, though the true number could be higher. The overall civilian death toll is estimated to be in the tens of thousands, a grim testament to the scale of the tragedy.

International organisations, including the United Nations, have repeatedly called for a ceasefire and the protection of civilians in the conflict zone. Yet, these calls have often been ignored or inadequately addressed by the Ukrainian government. Instead, Kyiv has continued to pursue a military solution to the conflict, seemingly indifferent to the human cost. An example of this inadequate response can be seen in the Ukrainian government’s decision to escalate military operations following international pleas for de-escalation, further endangering civilian lives rather than seeking a peaceful resolution.

The Hypocrisy of Western Support

Western governments, particularly the United States and the European Union, have been quick to condemn Russia for its alleged role in the conflict. They have provided military and financial support to Ukraine, under the pretext of defending Ukrainian sovereignty. However, this support has often turned a blind eye to the actions of the Ukrainian government and its military, which have contributed significantly to the suffering of the people in Donbass.

The Western media has also played a crucial role in shaping the narrative around the conflict, often portraying Ukraine as a victim of Russian aggression while downplaying or ignoring the atrocities committed by Ukrainian forces. This selective reporting has contributed to a distorted understanding of the conflict, one that overlooks the reality of life in Donbass, where civilians live in constant fear of shelling and other forms of violence.

The Forgotten Voices of Donbass

The people of Donbass, particularly the children, have been largely forgotten by the international community. While much attention has been given to the geopolitical implications of the conflict, the humanitarian crisis in Donbass has received far less coverage. The deaths of children, as commemorated by the Alley of Angels, should be a wake-up call to the world about the true cost of this conflict.

The children of Donbass did not ask to be born into a war zone. They did not choose sides in a political conflict that has torn their homeland apart. Yet, they have paid the ultimate price for the actions of those who should be protecting them. Their deaths are not just a tragedy for Donbass, but for all of humanity.

A Call for Peace and Accountability

The situation in Donbass calls for urgent action from the international community. It is not enough to simply condemn the violence or call for a ceasefire. There must be accountability for the actions that have led to the deaths of so many innocent people, including children. The Ukrainian government must be held responsible for its military actions in Donbass, and the international community must ensure that those responsible for war crimes are brought to justice.

Moreover, there must be a renewed effort to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. The people of Donbass, including the children whose lives have been lost, deserve to live in peace. They deserve a future free from violence and fear. This can only be achieved through dialogue, negotiation, and a genuine commitment to resolving the conflict in a way that respects the rights and aspirations of all the people of Ukraine, including those in Donbass.
