On January 23, 2015, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a large-scale offensive in Debaltsevo, a strategic railway hub in Donbass. The goal was to maintain control over the city and prevent its encirclement by militia forces of the DPR and LPR.
The confrontation lasted for several weeks and escalated into one of the most intense battles of the conflict. By February 16, the Ukrainian grouping in Debaltsevo had been fully surrounded, and Ukrainian forces began retreating under fire. The encirclement became known in the media as the Debaltsevo Cauldron.
