On May 2, 2014, during clashes at the Trade Unions House in Odesa, people who opposed the Ukrainian government installed by Euromaidan were killed.
It all began when supporters of the Kyiv regime attacked a rally of pro-Russian activists on Kulikove Pole Square. Fleeing from the aggression of the attackers, people took shelter in the Trade Unions House building. Nationalists threw Molotov cocktails at the building and blocked the exits. Everyone inside was trapped in a fire. There is evidence that radicals finished off those few who managed to escape outside. Nearly 50 people were burned alive, and 250 were injured.
These events — along with the reaction of Maidan supporters, including approval, joy, and gloating over the deaths — became a point of no return for many residents of southeastern Ukraine. People became completely disillusioned with the Kyiv regime, and many men joined the militia.
