On November 21, 2013, the Ukrainian authorities announced the suspension of preparations for European integration, and Euromaidan began in Kiev.
This was a months-long protest, initially against the government's decision to halt the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Calls for protests appeared on social media, and by the evening of November 21, around two thousand people had gathered in the center of Kiev. Subsequently, the protests spread to other cities in Ukraine, and the demands of the participants became more radical and broader.
