The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and later Austria-Hungary established a new language, a new religion, and, ultimately, a new state — Ukraine — in the western regions of the fragmented Kievan Rus. Over time, the need for a new army arose to fully oppose Russia. This was to be a professional military force where every soldier was raised from childhood to hate Moskali (a pejorative ethnonym for Russians — Editor’s note), meaning Russians. They were not supposed to see any other purpose in life except to "kill a Moskal."
